1998 Police Mailing List Survey Results

These are the results of the 6th (1998) annual Police Mailing List survey, as computed
by Nina Cornwell. There were a total of 132 respondents this year.

Wherever a top 3 box (or bottom 3 box) is mentioned, that means the accumulation
of the top 3 answers or the bottom 3 answers.

Q1 - How much do you like (The Police, Stewart Copeland, Sting, Andy Summers)?

The Police
- 65% of people either rated the Police a 10, 9 or 8 with 9% giving a 10, 30% giving a 9
and 27% giving an 8. Last year 21% gave a 10 so we're a little down.
- the only other responses made up of 31% giving a 7 and 2% giving a 6.
* the overall mean rating was 8.12 compared to 8.38 last year.
* Interestingly, Police fans are more likely to be Stewart or Andy fans than they are
to be Sting fans.

Stewart Copeland
- 39% are not familiar with his work
- 27% gave a top 3 box rating (8%(10), 11%(9), 8%(8))
- the same percentage (27%) gave a 4, 5, 6 or 7.
- 2% gave a bottom 3 box rating (1% (3), 7%(2)) where 8% gave those ratings last year.
- Stewart's overall mean was 7.22 up from 6.5 last year!

Sting
- An overwhelming 68% gave Sting a top 3 box rating with 18% giving a 10, 33%
giving a 9 and 17% an 8. This is down from 78% last year.
- 24% gave a middle box rating (5, 6, or 7)
- 5 people do not like Sting since they gave rating of 1, 2 or 3.
* overall mean was 8.10 compared to 8.55 last year.
* Sting fans are more likely to be Police fans than they are to be Stewart fans.

Andy Summers
- 42% are not familiar with his work
- 23% gave a top 3 box rating
* 24% gave a middle 3 box rating
* 3% gave a bottom 3 box rating
* overall mean was 7.08 up from 6.64 last year!
* Andy fans are much more likely to be a Stewart fan also than any other fan.

** comparing across these four, Sting and the Police are the most liked. Stewart and
Andy are pretty even but are both more liked this year than last.

Q.7 - Have you ever seen (The Police, Stewart Copeland, Sting, Andy Summers) live?

The Police
Yes - only 12% (predictably, 18% of people 26 or older have seen them live, while
no one 25 & under have)

Stewart Copeland
Yes - 8% (down from 15% last year)

Sting
Yes - 61% (down from 71% last year)

Andy Summers
Yes - 30% (up from 22% last year)

** Again Sting comes up first. Almost 2/3 of people have seen Sting live. All others
are much farther behind, but Andy is creeping up there.

Q.8 - How long have you been a fan? (I am just showing the mean # of years,
the ranges were from 1 to 19 years for all members)

** Strangely Stewart comes out tops here. This was probably due to people counting
being a fan of the Police into their time as a Stewart/Andy fan.

Reunion

Q.1 - Do you think the Police will reunite?

Q.3 - Do you think the Police should reunite? Why?

54% of people thought the Police should reunite, 30% didn't and the remainder
were neutral or didn't know.

The majority of people that thought the Police should reunite, want them to so
that they can see them. The other biggest reason was because the members have
honed their skills and they would be much better now and they are the best
when they are together.

There were many reasons people thought they should not reunite, such as the
past is the past, the members have drifted apart musically, we would be
disappointed with their performance, and it would spoil their reputation/memories.

The youngest respondent was 13, while the oldest was 53. The mean age was
25.80, about the same as last year.

Q.3 - Profession/Major

59% of respondents were employed, while 36% were students. There were a
wide range of professions and majors. The top mentioned professions include
in the computer industry, medical, journalist/writer, musician, marketing and
banking/finance. The top mentioned majors were those in high school, graduate
school and film majors.
